Liposuction is designed as a volume-reducing tool. This sculpting tool is one of the most common procedures performed today, with minimal incisions placed in natural creases, to allow access to the middle and deep fat compartments for extraction. Liposuction is ideally suited for fat removal where the integrity of the underlying musculature is good and the elasticity of the skin is sufficient to shrink smoothly to the contour of the fat removed. Liposuction is not intended to improve or remove cellulite, and, in many instances, may make such dimpling worse. Many methods of liposuction are currently available and include ultrasonic, tumescent techniques and laser assisted. Your method is dependent upon your relative amount of fat excess, skin type and age.
Your surgery time depends upon the amount of fat to be removed. Postoperative garment wear is required for 4 weeks. General anesthesia is commonly used for patient comfort. Typical arrival prior to surgery is 1 hour in preparation for surgery and approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour for postoperative care on completion of the procedure. The access incisions are closed with absorbable material, and drainage is expected for up to 24 hours. A compressive garment is placed immediately after surgery, to minimize fluid accumulation and to enhance the long-term results.
All patients are seen within 48 hours of their surgery. The skin is thoroughly evaluated, and additional instructions are provided at that time. Continued improvement takes place for up to 6 months and ongoing improvement is the norm. Revision rates for contour irregularities are approximately 5% to 10%. Typical return to work is in 3 to 5 days, and return to exercise is approximately 2 weeks, again, depending upon the areas involved and the volume of fat removed.
